A Fun-Filled Day at Six Flags

playing on the bridge

On Sunday, our little family of 3 went to Six Flags for Anheuser Busch’s annual Family Day event. AB rented the park for all employees and their families, handed out 20 dollars per person to spend on food, games, or merchandise, and provided endless kegs of beer throughout the park. Pretty sweet. So, Nick and I packed a day bag and off we went for a fun-filled day. We arrived right at opening and we didn’t leave until the park closed at 5:30pm. Since we met up with some friends, Nick and I were able to ride some roller coasters. We simply took turns watching Xander. The park itself is very kid-friendly and Xander didn’t have a lack of things to do. He really loved the three tiered park-jungle-gym with its slides, bridges and chimes. He also enjoyed the fountains in Bugs Bunny Land. For lunch, he dined on good-old Six Flags chicken Fingers and fries. Nick and I used his bottomless PowerAid sippy cup for ourselves, though. Haha. It was a pretty hot day (around 84 degrees) with no clouds and an adundance of sunshine. Thankfully no one came home burned. But we did all come home tired (Xander only napped for an hour in the stroller), stinky, and sore (Nick was foolish and wore flip flops). In the end, we did a U-turn in the parking lot and went back for season passes for 2009.

Gator Party a Success

volleyball game

volleyball game

Over the weekend, Nick & I had a Gator football party at our house. We thought the Tennessee Vol game would be a good one, but it appeared the Vols didn’t show up. They got slaughtered by Tebow and the crew. Alas, it didn’t matter. The key to party success? Be sure to have plenty of food, beer, and yard games. And boy, we did! We had beer coolers set up on multiple floors of our house, the slow cooker overfloweth of meatballs (which were completely gone by the end of the night–thank you Sams Club), and yard games as far as ye eye could see. Baggo, washers, volleyball, and some other random game that I can’t remember the name of, were constantly in action. Little Xander wasn’t the only kid at this seemingly adult party, but he wasn’t interested in playing with them (because they were playing with HIS toys and he gets to play with those all day long). He enjoyed playing in the coolers, checking out the cool chairs in the yard, and watching the yard games in action. At one point, partygoer Kelly showed him the juicebox cooler and he was in hog-heaven when she popped in a straw for him and he got to taste the juice sweetness. He’s never had a juicebox before that moment. It took some ’straw’ educating, but he forever loves Kelly now. Th end of the party came too soon, but all good things must come to an end. We were very thankful the rain never came and that the party-cleanup wasn’t too bad. Overall, our first St. Louis-style Gator party was a success!

mmm, meatballs. And Jovans awesome Gator art made a fab focal point.

First big boy haircut

Today Xander had his first big boy haircut at the local Great Clips. In the past, Daddy & Mommy trimmed his hair but didn’t do a very good job. So we let his hair grow out a bit (to hide our errors) before we sheepishly brought him to a professional. Okay, she was like 20 years old (seriously, we asked!) but still! Xander sat so still and was so patient during the 10 minute process. I was shocked! The end result is quite good so it was well worth the 12 bucks we paid. Here’s a short video documenting the event (and documenting that my son CAN sit still).

I just went in Xander’s room to check on him (it’s near the end of naptime & I thought he might be awake) and this is what I saw. His diaper is no longer located on his bum but on the floor 5 feet away from the crib. Never wake a sleeping baby, right? …

18 months old!

It’s hard to believe that Xander is a year and a half old! Where has the time gone? Today we had his 18 month check up at the Doctor’s office and Xander was a champ. He weighs 24 lbs, 5 oz (30% percentile so yep, he’s still skinny), measures 34 inches (90% percentile, my boy’s definitely tall for his age) and his head measured in the 80% percentile. He passed the developmental questions with flying colors and now the Doc wants us to work on getting Xander to drink from a cup instead of a sippy cup. Xander has nearly mastered the fork/spoon (he still needs help getting the food ONTO the utensil) so we hope the cup transition won’t be too messy. Yea, right. Who am I kidding?! A lot has changed in Xander since my last “Xander update” so here’s kinda a synopsis of his current behavior and development.

SLEEPING: Xander still sleeps awesome during the night. He usually wakes somewhere between 7 - 8 am (usually between 7- 7:30) and gets put down for bed between 8 -8:30 pm. He takes a approximately 2 hour nap after lunch time. He’s VERY active during the day so usually Mommy & Daddy go to bed not long after he does.

ACTIVITIES: Xander is so active. He is a machine and he runs nonstop. He’s a climber, a runner, and a dancer. He loves testing boundaries and trying new things. He loves climbing the stairs, running across the kitchen, walking backwards, and practicing stepping down into our sunken living room without pausing/crawling down. If you tell him “Happy Feet” he’ll stomp his feet in a fast motion. If you ask him to show you his ears, eyes, face, hair, head, mouth, belly, hands, and feet, he will. He likes clapping, sticking his thumbs in his ears, getting tickled, and getting his hair brushed. But he’s very independent. He prefers to brush his own teeth and wants to use the fork by himself. He likes playing with non-toys like the lamp, Tupperware items, pans from oven drawer, cords, electrical outlets, candles, dog food bowls, rocks, sticks, paperclips, pencils, trash cans, drawers, water bottles etc. Obviously some of those items are off-limits but he’s sneaky and often doesn’t listen when I say no. Morning snack is held in the jogging strollers when I jog my daily 2 miles. He plays outside as often as possible. He has a cool wagon, wheel-barrow, lawn mower, sand box, balls, golf set etc. that he enjoys playing with. But often he ends up playing with the bugs, flowers, rocks, or outdoor chairs. We go to the park or mall playground almost daily so he gets interaction with other children. He’s become a ‘regular’ so-to-speak and often sees other regulars that know his name. And yes, he’s had a couple run-ins with older children that run a-muck and seem not to listen to their parents. Or their parents are zoned out listing to their ipods, talking on their cells or are just drooling on the bench not properly supervising their hooligans. Indoor activities Xander loves include playing with puzzles, pushing his cars around, watching himself on my digital camera, throwing balls, and stacking things.

SPEECH: Xander has a short list of words (around 7) in his vocabulary but speaks gibberish nonstop. He enjoys saying “EHH” at me to get my attention (ie: when he wants me to put more food on his fork or when he’s done napping and wants me to come in his room). His fav and most used words are “doggy” AND “uh oh.” He also says “All Done” a lot. One neat thing is that Xander understands a ton of directions and words. He probably understand more than I even realize. For example, the other day when reading a book, I started asking him to point to things on the pages. “Where’s the duck?” “Where’s the flower?” “Where’s the milk?” or “Where’s the rabbit?” And he successfully pointed to everything. I was amazed. Some directions he knows include “Ready for Lunch?” (he runs to the highchair) or “Go get me your shoes” (and he does) or “Pinch Daddy’s nose” (hahaha). Of course, he still refuses to follow this direction: “No!”

EATING: Xander is a good eater. He likes most fruits and some veggies. We’ve discovered he likes fresh veggies over canned. He loves corn on the cob kernels that I cut off and he can’t get enough of my candied carrots rounds. He even likes roasted, cheesy cauliflower! Canned corn or canned carrots? He won’t touch the stuff! Xander dislikes mash potatoes, Walmart-brand sliced cheese, cinnamon sugar toast (I know, he’s crazy), and melons. His favorite things to eat include spaghetti, bananas (he’s my little monkey), and breads (banana bread and jelly toast are good examples).

XANDER & THE DOG: Kali isn’t man’s best friend, she’s Xander’s best friend. They are so good together and Kali’s such a patient chill, dog! Who would’ve guessed?! Xander loves to cuddle with Kali on her doggy bed, feed her dryer sheets, and pat her on the back. He likes watching her eat her food. He sits real close and if a piece of food drops on the carpet, he’ll pick it up and put it back in her bowl. When she’s finished he’ll say “All Done” and pick up her bowl and give it to me.  They play together in the living room daily. One popular game is ‘Catch me if you Can.’ Kali makes laps around the ottoman as Xander chases her. He laughs hysterically even when he fails at ‘catching’ her. It’s just adorable to watch them interact. Kali is definitely protective of him and often sits in his room when we are gone. She joins us for story time each night, too. :-)

So, I hope you have an idea now what life with the X-man is like nowadays. He’s such a delight to have in our lives and we love him dearly!

Where did summer go?

Right now at 2:30pm it is only 61 degrees here in in Saint Louis. The weatherman says the hottest day in the next 5 days will be when the temperature maybe gets to 80 degrees. What?! Where did summer go? Normally September is when the weather takes a turn and begins to cool off but not this significantly! It’s been a bizarre summer, weather-wise. We had maybe 2 days of 100 degree temps whereas last summer we had 2 months of 100 degree temperatures. The weatherman forcasts a harsh winter in our future. Grrreat. Yea, I know we survived 2 New Hampshire winters but it’s been 3 years since then and I’m not a New Englander. Deep down, I’m a Floridian true and through.  I love Fall so I’m definitely not complaining, but Xander is. He was confused and unhappy wearing long sleeves and socks today. He doesn’t own sneakers or any sort of closed-toe shoe so he sported socks and sandals this morning on our daily morning run. He kept tugging at his socks and sleeves, whining. City workers are outside our house right now trimming tree branches near powerlines… another omen? The city of Saint Louis got a lot of heat after the 2006 ice storm that knocked out power to most residents in the middle of winter. Overgrown trees and branches were to blame. They broke under the weight of the ice and took down the powerlines with them. We, luckily, only had to live without heat and electricity for 1 day. Others were not so lucky and had to suffer for weeks.

Anyway, to get to the point of this blog… usually on the first day when I can open my windows to let the cool, pre-Fall breeze into my house, I bake. Baking and Fall go hand in hand. Last year I posted my Pumpkin Bread recipe (my fav Fall recipe which you can look at by clicking HERE) so this year I’m sharing my favorite Banana Bread recipe. Sorry Yankee Candle, you don’t duplicate the smell of this baking in my kitchen! Anyway, it’s the best banana bread recipe I’ve come across. Be sure to use very ripe bananas- my local Farmers Market sell the brown bananas for like 25 cents a pound so this is a very affordable bread to make.

Banana Bread

Ingredients:

1 cup granulated sugar
8 tablespoons (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
2 large eggs
3 ripe bananas
1 tablespoon milk
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon salt

Instructions:

Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Butter a 9 x 5 x 3 inch loaf pan.

Cream the sugar and butter in a large mixing bowl until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.

In a small bowl, mash the bananas with a fork. Mix in the milk and cinnamon. In another bowl, mix together the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt.

Add the banana mixture to the creamed mixture and stir until combined. Add dry ingredients, mixing just until flour disappears.

Pour batter into prepared pan and bake 1 hour to 1 hour 10 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Set aside to cool on a rack for 15 minutes. Remove bread from pan, invert onto rack and cool completely before slicing.

A ‘Just for Fun’ Video

YEA, I’m a dork. And I’m not ashamed to admit it!!

Busy, busy…

Whew… it’s been a busy summer. We’ve had a vacation to Florida, a 5k race, out-of-towners, parties, get-togethers at our house, volleyball tournaments, projects, work functions, and unexpected doctor visit… I seriously don’t think we’ve had an entire weekend at home alone with nothing to do since early April! I love staying busy so I am not complaining. I just fear winter when I know everything will slow down. Or will it?

I think things have gotten busier as we’ve become more adjusted to Saint Louis. We’re actually planting roots here. To refresh the memories of those you who don’t remember or those of you who don’t know, Nick and I move a lot. We lived in Jacksonville, FL for 28 months (at 2 different addresses) and New Hampshire for 20 months. This month we’ve officially lived in Saint Louis for 3 year years (36 months)! That’s the longest I’ve lived anywhere since my home in Orlando (1st grade through high school). There was a point in my life when I could go anywhere (the grocery store, blockbuster, Disney World, the movies) and I would inevitably see SOMEONE I knew. Anyway. Ok yes, I lived in Gainesville for 4 years during college but I had 4 different addresses there. So it doesn’t count. We’ve become friends with our neighbors here… I mean, you KNOW you’re friends with the neighbors when they go out of their way to pick you up at a bar and drive you 15 miles to another bar. (Yea, we’re cheap and didn’t want to call a taxi. So who do you call? THE NEIGHBOR!) We’ve also become friends with Nick’s work associates like we do in every town we’ve lived in. Except this time, we’re staying. I guess that’s the problem with moving a lot (and moving out of state): you make friends and then leave them.  The friendship doesn’t have roots so you make them, then loose them for the most part. There are exceptions, though. In addition, we look forward to annual things here in Saint Louis like February’s Mardi Gras or Bud’s Family Day, Gator Club’s 1st Game of Football, October’s Apple Butter Festival, Pumpkin Picking at Eckert’s, etc.

So, in short… we’re loving life here in the Midwest. It’s nice to plant roots again, especially now that we have Xander in our lives. I wouldn’t mind if we stayed here for many more years. And FYI, there are many weekends in September and only a couple in October that are open and free. I do believe there are a handful of readers out there who’ve never made a trip out to the Gateway City yet!

hint, hint! :-)

Weekend fun

Mark, Julia, and Nick have been killed by the weekend.

Mark, Julia, and Nick have been killed by the weekend.

If a picture can really speak a thousand words, then let the pic above sums up our weekend. Our Canadian friends flew in on Friday for a long weekend visit and boy, we partied like rock stars. Our backyard is a mess… lawn chairs, Baggo, tables, empty beer cans and other party-paraphernalia litter the lawn. Our recycling bin is full, our wallets empty, and our bodies sick of loud music, alcohol and little-to-no sleep. We had a blast hanging out and catching up, though. We made lots of memories! And Xander loved all the attention, hugs, and new faces. He truly knows how to ‘ham’ it up for our guests. Thanks for the visit guys and let’s do it again soon!
