New Xander videos

Sorry I haven’t updated in a long time… having a 2 year old means there is little ‘down’ time. And during that ‘down’ time, I haven’t managed to find time to update this blog.  But anyway, here’s a couple new videos for you.

VIDEO 1: This was shot about a month ago. Xander is learning so fast; he’s a sponge for information. He can identify his numbers, alphabet, and colors. This video shows him IDing his numbers (but he mixes up the 6 and 9 and the 1 and 7). I know it’s just memorization but it’s crazy to think my 2 year old can ID his numbers and alphabet but some Kindergartners I use to teach couldn’t tell me what an M or 3 was.

VIDEO 2: This is from yesterday. Xander likes to (pretend to) play the WII. Nick helps him out, and I cheer. And then Nick nearly breaks it. :-)

A Spring morning in St. Louis

Spring is in the air… so Xander & I went flower hunting. Daffodils are beginning to open and forsythia bushes are profusely blooming. Here are some highlights from our spring morning.

My son is prone to accidents!

Some kids never get hurt. They never get stitches. They never go to the ER. They never get sick. They never have an accident! My son is NOT one of those kids. He has to be watched extra carefully because accidents are bound to happen. Xander is crazy and has no fear! :-)

His latest accident occurred on Sunday at the local grocery store. He got out of the shopping cart car and took off running to the automatic doors near the entrance. He zoomed out an open door (the entrance rather than the exit, mind you) and tripped. The automatic swing door then proceeded to close on him, but his feet stopped it from shutting all the way. He began to cry instantly. I noticed a little blood on his lip and assumed he had bit his lip. It wasn’t until I was strapping him into his carseat that I realized he had infact chipped his 2 front teeth!! The bottoms of the 2 teeth now had a small half moon piece missing.

So today we had an appointment with a local pediatric dentist. The experience was very painless and Xander cooperated. The dentist filed down the 2 teeth and now Xander doesn’t look like a vampire. In fact, his teeth look perfect! Better than before! I was amazed how well he stayed still during the procedure. The dentist doesn’t think the core of the tooth was injured so that’s good news. We’ll have to observe them to ensure they don’t change colors (indicating internal bleeding in the tooth). We also learned that our family dentist is dead wrong about Xander not needing teeth cleaning until he’s 3 or 4 years old. A pediatric dentist recommends a child be seen 6 months after his/her 1st tooth comes in. Whoops! So, Xander has his first teeth cleaning scheduled in June.

Let’s hope Xander stays accident-free for a few months or longer!!!

To Hostel or not to Hostel

Treks Backpackers in Rotorua

Treks Backpackers in Rotorua

I love traveling, but traveling can be expensive. Or does it? Normally I save money by shopping airline or cruiseline deals, traveling in the ’shoulder’ season, or by cutting back on my food or shopping allowances when on my trip. In addition, I normally stay at 2 0r 3 star hotels unless I get an amazing deal on something better (like the 5 star hotel I stayed at during my trip to Cancun in 2006).  To save money on my most recent trip to New Zealand, I opted to try out the hostel scene.

The rumor on the block is that NZ has amazing hostels… nothing like the scary one depicted in the film ‘Hostel.’  However, I checked reviews on Tripadvisor.com just in case and of course, there were some hostels that I would NEVER recommend to my enemy. But for the most part, the hostels were more than fine. We had our own room and our own bathroom. The rooms were clean.  And safe. And EXTREMELY affordable.  Seven nights of accommodation in New Zealand cost me $167.79 US (tax included). Or approximately $23.97 per night.  Incredible!

Overall the hostel experience was positive. The people I met and saw in the hostels were mostly in their 20s. Though I did see some older people as well. Everyone was very friendly, especially at the hostel in Rotorua. Some people traveled together but it did seem that there were many people traveling solo (and thus were willing to strike up a conversation and share traveling experiences). Most of the people I met were either studying abroad, traveling around the world or traveling during a break from their work visa. I wish I had done one of those things in my 20s. Unfortunately, it isn’t an American thing to do. The pressure to graduate college fast and to get a job and start working is the norm. Taking a year off to travel or to work abroad in the hospitality industry is considered almost-irresponsible to some people. I disagree and wish I had taken advantage of the hostel scene in my younger years. The only complaint I have about my time in the hostel was the heat in Auckland (no AC meant 70 degree temps in the room at night) and the noise on a couple of occasions (thank goodness for my iPod) which made sleeping difficult. I was slightly sleep deprived on this trip.

I’ve written TripAdvisor.com reviews for the 2 hostels in New Zealand where I stayed.  The first place I stayed, YHA Treks Backpackers in Rotorua (read my review), deserves 5 stars in my opinion. The second place, City Lodge in Auckland, wasn’t as comfortable or nice (Read my review). I would definitely stay in a hostel again, especially if my purpose of the trip to to sightsee and experience the city and NOT to lounge in bed all day.

Xander is 2 years old!

On March 8, Xander turned 2 years old! Hard to believe. Where has all the time gone? This past weekend my parents came into town to help celebrate Xander’s big day. Unforunately, he woke up Friday morning with a cold and mild fever. On Saturday he developed a raspy cough. In short, it’s a good thing I did plan a big birthday party because I would have canceled it. However, my parents (and Xander) were good sports. We still did cake and ice cream and we still went to the zoo. Overall I think Xander had a wonderful time this past weekend– mainly because he was drugged up on Tylenol! I’m attempting to be a “recessionista” so instead of paying the local grocery store $30 to make a nice cake for my son, my mom and I made an $11 home-made Elmo cake. It turned out wonderfully and tasted even better! Gift-wise, Xander received a ton of new toys and gadgets. He now has a beautiful new swing/jungle jim in the yard, new books, various noise-making toys, a shopping cart, a guitar, and a new chalk wall in the basement painted by me. He’s one spoiled little boy. Thank you to both sets of grandparents for the amazing presents! He loves them and you!

Pics

In January I had Xander’s photos taken at the Portofino Bay Hotel (site of our wedding reception) as a surprise for Nick for Valentine’s Day. Emily Anderson (no relation) was the photographer and her style is in tune with mine.  I added the pics to my flickr photo page last week but if you haven’t seen them yet, then click HERE. If you live in the Orlando area and would like to hire Emily, then check out her website www.thisiscampbell.com.  You may even see Xander’s pic on her site. :-)

In the meantime, I’m adding more photos from the past to my flickr page. My harddrive is full so I need to upload all my photos from computer to the Internet.

Update from Asia

I spent the night last night in South Korea and now I’m sittng at a wonderful FREE Internet lounge at the airport. They offer free laptops and internet usage for 30 minutes. Amazing! My iPod died long ago so I’m thrilled that I can finally charge it back up. I have a 13 hour flight ahead of me. Then I’ll finally be on US soil again. Then I have a long layover in Chicago (cross your fingers that I can get on an earlier flight) before the short 45 minute flight to St. Louis.  I’ve managed to pass by the time on the airplane fairly well. So far I’ve read 2 600 page books from the Twilight series, 30o pages of a Vivien Leigh biography, and watched 4 full length films. Luckily, my next flight has personal entertainment screens embedded in the seat in front of me (unlike my last flight which only had a big projection screen 10 rows in front of me… and only showed 2 films the entire flight. One Korean and one English). The airplane food isn’t good. I get 2 meals on board each leg. From New Zealand to South Korea I had lunch and dinner. They offer a Korean style meal or an American style meal. The American meal was beef and potatoes (yuck! I had that on the way over) or Korean style (Bimibop- rice, some sort of mysterious veggies that you mix with chili paste and sesame oil). I opted for Korean. It comes with fruit, tea, and a small shot of wine. For dinner I got a horrible mix of thin noodles and vegetables. Luckily it came with a roll, fruit, and dessert. Throughout the flight, water and juice is offered. And the typical quarter-sized bag of peanuts. This is my second Pacific journey… my first was in 2000 when I went to Tokyo. I flew Business class then. In conclusion, if you can afford it… avoid Coach. It sucks. You’ll be cramped, sore, and hungry after your 12+ hour flight.

Hiya again from NZ!

Hi all! Here’s another quick update from New Zealand. Things are wonderful here (though I do miss Nick & Xander terribly). The weather has been lovely (60s and 70s, sunny) and the adventures haven’t stopped yet. Yesterday we went cave tramping and tubing in Waitomo and saw the amazing glowworms. I even got to jump backwards down a couple waterfalls, deep in the cave systems of Waitomo. The water was freezing and I could see my breath in the caves. My thumbs and hands were numb and barely functional after the 3 hour excursion. We had wet suits and jackets and booties, but nothing protecting our hands. Then today, we did things around town (I’m in Rotorua). We went up a Skyline and did a luge ride. Afterwards we went Zorbing (a huge plastic ball is full of water and then pushed down a hill. You spin all around and get quite bumped around). It was AWESOME! Tomorrow in the early AM we head back to Auckland for some more NZ adventures. All is well, and I’m having a ton of fun with Rebecca. Love and miss you all! :-)

I can handle this

Being a stay home dad is not so hard. So what if Xander put the car in Drive and hit the garage…so Xander finished his first Budweiser without Me looking….so I fell a sleep and woke up with Xander sipping Cognac, smoking cigar and watching Cinemax… its not like we stayed up all night and ate pizza… oh ya we did. This Mr. Mom thing is like riding a bike. Thanks everyone for tuning in! See you next blog…… Everyone except for Leigh stop reading now…………………….Please come home Leigh, I need your help. I know people think being a stay at home mom is not too bad, but they’re crazy. I’ll never go out drinking again, I promise to stay home every night. Massages, cook you dinner, change dirty diapers, you name it.

Update from New Zealand

Hi everyone. I made it! I’m here, finally, in New Zealand. I arrived yesterday morning very tired and very scary looking. I didn’t sleep a wink on my 3 flights so in all, I stayed awake for nearly 48 hours. My last flight was delayed so I nearly missed my bus in NZ! Luckily, after running up a huge hill to the bus stop in Auckland, I met up with my gal pal Rebecca and boarded the bus just in time. We are now in Rotorua, New Zealand. Last night we explored the little town and had some yummy Latin food and sangria (the perfect thing to completely knock me out). At 11pm, I finally passed out. I slept like a rock and feel really good today. Even though the time difference here is 15 hours, I already think I’ve adjusted. Today we went on a tour to a geothermal park and watched a geyser erupt! Tonight we’ll probably  do some more exploring and perhaps visit the local spa to soak in some of their ‘pools.’ Sounds like Nick is doing well with Xander… my in laws arrive tonight in Saint Louis to visit for the week and lend a helping hand. I made a little video of myself reading a book before I left the USA so Xander could ‘watch’ me in his absence. Apparently he likes it. Anyway, that’s all for now. I’m paying for internet by the minute so I gotta run!
