Merry Christmas

I leave early Thursday morning for a Gone with the Wind, Mommy-weekend away. I’m traveling to Atlanta and Marietta, GA to celebrate 70 years of GWTW, the epic film that starred my favorite actress Vivien Leigh. In anticipation of the event, I’ve been interviewing cast mates and writers on my other blog, ScarlettOHara.org. Oh, and I’ve been running contests, too, to generate buzz for this amazing event.  I adore attending these events because it allows me to feel not-so-dorkish. I mean, I’ll be surrounded by other fans of the book, film, and actors so I can comfortably speak freely about my passion. It’s gonna be an action-packed weekend! Read about the Itinerary HERE. Nick & his parents kindly provided me with an early Christmas gift that will accompany me to Georgia– a new camera!! I’m covering the weekend for the Philadelphia Bulletin so it’s always best to have a backup camera in tow. :-) It feels like Christmas!

Practicing with my early Christmas present

My poor lil baby!

Xander has had a rough month… the poor little guy has had the stomach flu, 1 impacted front tooth, and now some sort of virus that has him chugging tylenol and motrin to keep his fever down. Plus, he has the worst stuffy nose! Keep him in your thoughts and prayers! In between illnesses and injuries, he and I went to the park to explore the fall landscape. The leaves have fallen and the temperatures have soared into the upper 70s. Go figure. Hope everyone had a happy Halloween!

his front teeth have been chipped, filed, and now stuffed back into his gums. But he's still cute!

Invasion!

We’ve always had issues with Ladybugs at our current house. They love us. We hate them. They sneak inside, crawl on our walls and carpets and then die on our windowsills. And I’m not talking about 1 or 2 ladybugs. Well, today it appears that some new ladybugs hatched, or whatever it is they do, because the exterior of our house was covered with orange and black things creepy-crawlys! Poor Xander, who actually didn’t care, was covered in bugs! Go away, ladybugs! You aren’t cute!

Sunset Front Row Seats

One of my favorite things about our current house is the view from the kitchen window. The back of our house faces west, and the kitchen window above the sink also faces this direction. Over the past 4 years I’ve seen (and photographed) many pretty sunsets. When the trees lose all their leaves, the view gets even better as then the view stretches for miles and miles and miles. Anyway, here’s the dramatic sunset from 4 nights ago.. it was a beautiful burnt orange (looks pink in the pics) and deep purple! Who knew dish washing could be so beautiful?! You know what could per-fect this gorgeous view– a new, beautiful sink faucet. Fellow blogger Centsational Girl is currently running a Kitchen/Bathroom faucet Contest and the winner receives a new PricePfister faucet for their home. Cross your fingers I win! I want the Ashfield one!

Apple Picking with Xander

hes saying cheese!

he's saying cheese!

Last weekend Xander and I hopped over the Mississippi River into Illinois for some apple picking. We rode into the orchards on a large tractor-pulled wagon. Though the ride was bumpy and Xander tightly held my hands, he appeared to enjoy it. After we were dropped off and informed on the varieties of apples in the orchard, we opened our empty bag and headed toward the Jonathans. At first Xander wanted to pick the apples that were on the ground. I told him they were rotten, ‘yucky’ apples so then he proceeded to step on them and squish the rotten ones. But soon he realized how fun apple picking could be. Xander was a natural and there were plenty of low-to-the-ground branches. We quickly filled up our bag with red apples. We went over to the Golden Delicious section, too, and picked some golden yellow apples too. Soon we had over 7lbs of apples in our bag (way too much!), so we decided to check out the pumpkin patch. Xander loved picking out the green pumpkins that were still ‘rowing’ on the vine. Xander loved picking apples and later, he loved feeding the antelope and cattle. He DIDN’T like the portapotty and refused to go the bathroom until we were home and far away from that weird purple water. :-) Later I attempted to make my first, home-made apple pie. And it turned out wonderful. The recipe is below, but my recommendation is ONLY use HALF the sugar.

Apple Pie with yummy flaky crust!

Apple Pie with yummy flaky crust!

Traditional Apple Pie

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup shortening (recommended: Crisco)
  • Ice water
  • Filling, recipe follows
  • Serving suggestion: warm with vanilla ice-cream

Directions

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F.

In a medium-mixing bowl cut the shortening and salt into the flour by hand or with a pastry blender hands until it’s the texture of cornmeal. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of ice water over the mixture and mix just until the dough is moistened. Repeat by adding 6 to 8 tablespoons water (one at a time) until all the dough is just moist. Take care not to over mix.

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees F. Divide the dough in half and roll into a ball. Roll 1 ball into a circle to fit a 9 to 10-inch pie plate. To transfer the pastry to the pie plate, wrap it around a rolling pin and ease it into the pie plate. Be careful not to stretch the pastry. Trim it even with the edges of the pie plate. Add the apple filling into the pastry lined pie plate. Make sure they are laying flat. Cut butter into small pieces and put on top of the filling.

Roll the remaining pastry into a 12-inch circle. Place on top of the filling. Trim off 1-inch beyond the edge of the pie plate. Crimp the edges as desired. Cut slits to allow steam to escape when baking. Sprinkle a little sugar and cinnamon over the pie.

Cover the edges with foil to prevent over browning. Bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for another 20 to 25 minutes, or until it is golden brown. Serve warm with vanilla ice cream.

Filling:

  • 1/2 cup to 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 6 to 7 cups apples cut into thin slices (recommended: Green Golden and Jonathans)
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 tablespoons butter

In a medium bowl combine the apples, with the brown and white sugar. Add flour, cinnamon and continue mixing until they are well coated.

Yield: 4 to 6 servings

I ♥ Pumpkins!

It’s October! I love October; I love Fall; I love pumpkins!! When Nick and I lived in New Hampshire, I developed a deep love for the season of change… crisp weather, vibrant leaves, pumpkins and gourds galore, funky scarecrows, decorated hay bales, gardens full of mums, baking… ahh, it’s definitely one of my favorite seasons now. I grew up in Florida which has only 1 season– summer. So I never really understood what 4 seasons meant until I moved away.

This year I am obsessed with nontraditional pumpkins like albino and pale green heirloom pumpkins. I found a pretty heirloom pumpkin for $5 at my local grocery store and I purchased 2 faux albino pumpkins at Michaels for $13. There are so many things carving and crafting things you can do with pumpkins–just check out Martha Stewart’s website! I’m still collecting ideas for my pumpkin carving project… let’s say it’ll be an untraditional idea. :-)

I’ve never gone antique ‘hunting.’ I don’t know why, really. Perhaps I always thought antiques=junk. Why would I want some someone else’s beat-up, used, old, smelly piece of home decor? Harsh, I know. But to be perfectly honest, that was my snobby attitude– only something NEW can be chic and stylish and contemporary. But to be perfectly honest, yet again, my wallet and the planet cannot afford my need for interior change. I love change and I love to mix things up in my house. My sense of style is constantly evolving. I still consider myself a contemporary lover, but I enjoy splashes of Hollywood Regency, Traditional, and most recently, vintage. The lovely Tori Spelling (c’mon, I was a huge 90210 fan) labels her style as ‘Modage,’ a combination of Modern & Vintage. I dig that. And I dig her style (just check out her reality show on Oxygen). Pottery Barn’s fall collection is label ‘Vintage’ but uh, it’s NEW stuff. And, uh, I don’t like ANYTHING in their glossy catalogue. What I do like is vintage that’s been updated with high gloss lacquer or antique chairs upholstered in funky patterns. Modage, baby!

So, this weekend, on a whim, I ran over to our local antique mall (across from the hospital where Xander was born). Apparently Missouri has a ton of antique malls and shops, but this one was close and quite large (55,000 sq. feet of stuff). Boy, there definitely was a LOT of ‘junk’– things you’d expect to see on an episode of Hoarders. The mall was divided up into many, many rows of ‘booths.’ Antique dealers rent space in the mall and set up shop, displaying their treasures (and junk). The booths are unmanned so visitors can browse without pressure from sellers. Overall it was a very enjoyable experience! Most sellers arrange their antiques beautifully– cups and saucers lovingly set out on antique cabinets, antique chairs arranged around an antique coffee table with crystal, tear drop chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. I adored all the vintage cooking pots and appliances, the old Life magazines, 1950-esque toys and books, and, my favorite, a 1957 Cadillac white and emerald baby carriage!! But, there were some weird things displayed too– a high-heel shoe chair, bizarre bar lights, military submarine shells, horribly tacky ‘art’ and an array of metal junk (not sure what it even was?!).

Here are some photos from my first Antique Hunting trip last weekend. These were taken with my camera phone, so I apologize for the poor quality!

Note: I came out empty handed, but I did LOVE the refinished antique white dresser. It had a SOLD sign on it, but it gave me inspiration for a future Craigslist find.

Father & Son Day

Nick works a lot. Usually he pulls 12-hour work days, and most weeks he  has 1, sometimes 2, extracurricular activities or work-related events that prevent him from coming home until after Xander’s bedtime. This past weekend Nick also had to work 6 hours at the brewery on Saturday morning, and next weekend Nick’s going away for 4 days for a boy’s fly-fishing & golf weekend. In short, Xander was in need of some Daddy time. So on Sunday morning, Nick took Xander to Six Flags for some ferris wheel, tea cup, and carousel riding fun!  Xander’s favorite thing about the day was the ferris wheel and the corn dog on a stick lunch he got to have. Nick’s fav thing, besides spending time with his buddy, was making a new record at the basketball skill game (rolling eyes). They took along the camera so they could show me all the fun they had on their Father & Son day! Nick’s such a good daddy!!

Apron Madness!

Nick’s 12 hour work days are becoming habit these days so I’ve been trying to learn how to entertain an only child / toddler / active boy during the meal making process. Coloring books, playdough, and water color painting only lasts so long before Xander is underfoot whining for my attention. Since I prefer to make a healthy home cooked meal instead of relying on take out or frozen meals, I need at least 30 minutes in the kitchen to cook. So as of recently, I’ve been involving him in the cooking process… teaching him new words, showing him what I’m doing, and instructing him on stove safety. He appears to enjoy it! He even drags in his bathroom step stool so he can be closer to the action! The only thing missing is an apron around his neck A.K.A “Mommy’s bib.” So, I sat down the other night and searched Etsy for some child-sized aprons for Xander. Etsy.com is a marketplace where people can sell their home-made stuff… there’s a ton of junk on there, but occasionally, with the right search, you can find some gems! I wish I had a sewing machine… or better yet, knew how to sew!!

How about this little dinosaur apron with matching hat from Etsy seller Key2Life?

What is old is new again…

I call it a peacock chair because it sounds exotic and I love peacocks! But there isn’t any blue on this large rattan chair. Instead, the name refers to the large fan-shaped chair back. My mom use to have one in our Orlando living room during my formidable years and I recall thinking it was pretty cool. But I didn’t really like our living room overall– it was straight out of the 1970s with browns and oranges. My parents didn’t change out that hideous furniture, drapes etc. until 2003! Well, just recently I discovered an inspirational photo of a black peacock chair and said to myself “I want it!!” Sadly, my mom’s peacock chair found a new owner during one of her many garages sales so I scoured eBay and Craigslist. The ones on eBay were well over $100 dollars but I did find one on Craigslist for $35.  Next, I picked 4  cans of Krylon gloss black spray paint at Walmart for $2.50 each. Within a week, my peacock chair was updated! It’s going in my soon-to-be black and white color scheme ‘library.’ Just need the Ikea Billy bookcase system now so I can move my book collection in!
